So That's Where All My Money Goes

Someone tagged me in a note on Facebook called "50 Bands I Have Seen". Feeling that 50 wasn't sufficient, I decided to catalog ALL the bands I've seen. Amazingly, it came out to an even 100. I'm sure I missed some, but my ticket stub collection helped me remember some I had forgotten in the mists of time. For the record, I'm counting bands I have paid to see and their opening acts. Not "I paid a cover to get into a bar, and this band was playing." Nobody would have heard of them anyway, including me. If I've seen a band more than once, I put the number of times in parentheses. Criticize away!

Note: If you make fun of me for a particular band, I will claim that they were an opening act.

Note 2: For a few hours I had an incomplete list up here. This is the real one.

Is this the place where we point out our favorite bands that you haven't seen?

Noticeably absent: R.E.M.

Yeah, I wish they were on the list. I had a chance to see them in 1989 at MSG and turned it down like a moron. The other band that's not on here that I REALLY want to see is AC/DC. I've pretty much taken care of all the other classic bands I like that aren't dead or broken up.

I'm sure I would be surprised by more of these if I'd heard of more of them, but the only one that really seems left-fieldy is Talib.

You do have quite a diverse lot there, and I like a lot of them, but I'm just not really into seeing live music.

I think it's something to do with having been violently ill two of the three times I went to a big outdoor music fest as a young'un. Psychosomatic, like Miss Hoover's lyme disease.

I've seen quite a few of these as well. Though I'm jealous you got to see The Violent Femmes.

Lucky!

I'm jealous of the Les McCann and Sonny Rollins and curious about the Michael Bolton.

I was all impressed you'd seen David Bowie. Then you went and ruined it by adding Michael Bolton to the list.

Gah! I posted an incomplete early version of the list. The real list didn't go up until 1am Eastern time.

And as for Michael Bolton, I knew that would draw some ire. I saw him as an opening act for Heart back in the 80s when he was trying out the rock n' roll thing. I swear!

Hehehehehe. Michael Bolton. I'm sure he was opening for someone though, huh buddy? Or you wanted hair tips. I like to think you saw him accidentally or to give him your evil blue eye stare of doom.

I have seen a trillion bands also but oddly, only three bands on your list. I'm not even saying which. :)

I'm jealous you've seen Bruce and Sir Paul.

Primus sucks!

Maybe I should maintain diplomatic silence? :)

(I do thoroughly approve of Foo Fighters, RHCP and U2 though)

Very cool post. I really enjoyed reading your list ... and it only caused a few double-takes. The aforementioned Michael Bolton ... and you saw Yes seven times?! I don't think I could handle that. LOL

I should really do this one myself, though I'm ancient enough that I've lost a bunch of stubs and will probably forget half of what I've seen. In the late 70's my best friend's step-dad worked for a record store and he got us tickets to everything that came to New Haven a/o Hartford, CT ... so my list would raise a few eyebrows as well, no doubt.

Really, though, I love music so much that I'd see almost anyone live. Great post and I dig your style, words.

Good news. I heard on the radio driving in this morning that AC/DC is kicking off a new tour.

I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it if I hadn't read this yesterday.

YOU SAW ETTA JAMES????

I've been wanting to see her forever. But the last couple of times she's come to NYC, it's been at BB King's and ridiculously overpriced.

Ha ha...my word ver is "recation." I need one of those. It sucks being back at work.
